The character is a cash cow, but is the physical transformation to play her worth the continued effort?

Tyler Perry has been pretty vocal about his bittersweet relationship with Madea, the pistol-toting grandma character he created and portrays on both the stage and the big screen to much financial success.

While Perry’s non-Madea movies have been well received at the box office, the films in which he stars as the character fare substantially better in ticket sales, which puts the filmmaker in a quandary.

“Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” topped the U.S. box office last weekend with $41 million in its first three days of release. It marks his best opening weekend of all-time and is poised to sprint past the take of his top-grossing film, “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion” (2006).

Still, Perry confesses: “I would love to see Madea die a slow death in the next film.” The reason? It takes a lot of effort to turn the 6-foot-5-inch Perry into big momma Madea.

He knows she’s “a whole lot of fun to watch. But to do it is a nightmare,” Perry tells the Associated Press. “It’s all one suit that I’m zipped into, so it’s all heavy. The hips are heavy. And the more I sweat, the heavier it gets. I see why women have back problems who have large breasts. Holding those things upright can be tough.”

Come summer, the 39-year-old Perry — whose Atlanta-based media empire includes films, books, videos, theatrical productions and TV shows — will be back on the big screen making a cameo appearance in director J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek.” Next is Perry’s own period drama “A Jazz Man’s Blues.” Then, more Madea, with “Madea’s Class Reunion.”

Perry said that it’s clear that fans want more of her. “As long as they want to see her, she’ll stay around. But, I’m telling you, if they ever stop coming, she’s going to die a quick death. ‘Madea’s Funeral.’ That’s what you look forward to.”

MICHAEL VICK CLEARED FOR HOME CONFINEMENT: No room at the halfway house, so NFL star will get monitoring device.

Michael Vick will get to serve out the rest of his prison sentence under home confinement because of the lack of space available for him at a halfway house, a government official told The Associated Press Thursday.

The NFL quarterback is serving a 23-month sentence at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., after pleading guilty to bankrolling a dogfighting operation at a home he owned in eastern Virginia’s Surry County. He also admitted to participating in the killing of several underperforming dogs.

Vick’s lawyers were expecting him to be moved any day into a halfway house in Newport News. But because of a lack of space, Vick will be released instead to his Hampton home at some point on or after May 21, said the official.

The suspended Atlanta Falcons player will be on electronic monitoring and will only be allowed to leave home for activities approved by his probation officer, the official said. He is eligible for release in July.

Whitney Houston is reportedly going public with her support of Rihanna, urging her not to reconcile with Chris Brown following an alleged fight between them that left her with cuts and bruises.

Houston, who ended her turbulent marriage to Bobby Brown in 2007, is advising the 21-year-old to end the troubled romance for good.

“Don’t make the same mistakes I did. Whenever you let your heart rule your head, you are bound to run into trouble,” Houston said in a statement to Hollyscoop.com.

Houston and Bobby Brown split in 2006 and endured a messy divorce and custody battle over their teenage daughter Bobbi Kristina. Brown was subsequently forced to deny rumors of domestic abuse within their relationship, insisting that although the former couple was prone to heated arguments, their fights never turned physical.

Tyra Banks is opening new doors for shorter models on “America’s Next Top Model.” Cycle 12 is on its way in March, but Banks says Cycle 13 will only accept wannabe models five-feet-seven-inches and shorter. TVGuide.com quotes Banks who says Cycle 13 is all about catering to the shorter model. She adds, quote, “There have been top supermodels in the past that weren’t as tall as the industry demands, like fashion icon Kate Moss.” She adds that Cycle 13 is all about catering to the shorter model. This isn’t the first time Banks has raised eyebrows with the format of her show. In Cycle 11, she allowed the first ever transgendered contestant to enter the competition. Although the 22-year-old was eliminated from the competition, Banks later surprised her with a 35-thousand-dollar gender reassignment surgery. The two-hour premiere of “America’s Next Top Model’s” Cycle 12 kicks off Wednesday, March 4th on the CW.
