The Ernie Barnes Passed…

May 1st 2009

A lot of you don’t know but before I was a photographer I was and still, a painter. The other day while on the Concreteloo.com I found out that the top artist in the black community had passed away. I know your probably thinking why is this important to you I have  to tell you that if it had not been for him half of the art work that is out today would not be around. Ernie Barnes who I had a chance to meet and work with about 5 years ago was crazy, I have to say and at times was a little on the arty side, but most importantly was one of the best that ever live. This is what Concreteloop.com had to say:

Artist and former professional football player Ernie Barnes  has died. He was 70. Best known for his unique, figurative style of painting, Barnes is widely recognized as the foremost African-American artist today.

Born on July 15, 1938, in Durham, North Carolina, Barnes took up track and field and football in high school and played football at NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITYon an athletic scholarship. He went on to play offensive guard for five seasons in the American Football League and was designated the “Official Artist of the American Football League”.
