Seattle police are investigating what they call an assault of an officer in South Seattle. However, a police officer is seen punching a 17-year-old girl in the face during the incident captured by a video camera on Monday.
According to Seattle police, the incident began when an officer spotted a man jaywalking in the 3100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way S. at approximately 3:10 p.m. The man was some 15 feet away from a pedestrian overpass, police said.
The officer was talking to the man when he saw four young women jaywalk across the same street at the same spot. The officer asked the women to step over to his patrol car, but the women were being “verbally antagonistic toward the officer,” according to officials. One of the women, later identified as a 19 year old, began to walk away from the scene despite the officer’s instructions, prompting the officer to walk over to her and escort her back to his patrol car. The girl then “began to tense up her arm, and pull away from the officer while yelling at him,” investigators said. The officer told the girl to place her hands on his patrol car, but she refused. When the officer tried to grab hold of her, “she pulled away and twisted, breaking free of the officer’s grip several times,” the blotter report said.
When the officer tried to handcuff the girl, another girl, this one 17 years old, intervened and placed her hands on the officer’s arm, “causing the officer to believe she was attempting to physically affect the first subject’s escape,” police said. The officer pushed back the second girl, but the girl came back at him. The officer then punched her, police said. The officer then handcuffed the 19-year-old woman. Other officers arrived and helped handcuff the second girl.
Both teens were cited for jaywalking. The older suspect was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of obstructing an officer. The 17-year-old girl was booked into the Youth Service Center for investigation of assault of an officer. Nobody was injured during the incident, police said. Seattle police have not reviewed the video of the incident. Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said investigators may review the video on Tuesday. Whitcomb said the officer involved in the incident sent out a call for help, prompting other officers to rush to his aid. All use of force on the job is reviewed, Whitcomb said, as use of force is under the officer’s discretion. He added that punching is a trained tactic.
“There will be a thorough investigation into this incident,” he said.
A police officer punched a girl in the face. The question is did he have to punch her or just pepper spray her? They said she was resisting arrest. Let’s not look at race and tell us what you think?

I doubt he was racist at all. In fact, I would be that those girls were prejudiced against police officers or maybe even authority in general. Regardless of how you feel you do not put you hands on a police officer. She is lucky she wasn’t tased. Just because she was young and black doesn’t mean he singled her out. The facts:
1. She was jaywalking, which is illegal.
2. She resisted arrest.
3. She assaulted a police officer.

I agree with Likecaesar. They jaywalked and it’s illegal, no matter HOW PETTY the crime is. Then for them to just not listen to the police officer then resist arrest. From what I saw, BOTH of the girls were attacking the police officer. They just better be happy he DIDN’T SLAM there asses to the ground, put the knee in the back and push they asses in the patrol car. He was as less aggressive as he could be. They just thought b/c they are BLACk (which I am) they didn’t have to listen.

Those girls were wrong no matter how you look at it. What could have been a simple ticket for Jaywalking has turned into resisting arrest, battery on a law enforcement officer and God only knows what else. This officer is not some Joe Blow off the streets. He was in uniform and they should have respected that. There’s a way to handle every situation, if they felt they were mistreated, they could have easily gone to internal affairs, but they felt they had to prove a point and fight an officer. And if you look at the girl in the pink, after she grab her friend, she put up her set like she was about to go toe to toe with the officer. He had to take her butt down by any means necessary!

Those girls may have been wrong, but you don’t hit a child in the face like this. The officer is obviously not trained to make a simple decision. He should have called for backup, but instead he reacted on impulse because you can clearly see that he was scared to death. I can guarantee you that instead of hitting her in the face, he may have though about shooting her. Scary and incompetent men like this should not carry badges. This is why police brutality exists because of men like him.

If you look at the start of the video, the girls don’t get mad until one of them is touched. We can’t hear the conversation, so who knows why he touched her. But strangers don’t have the right to touch someone else in a way that they find offensive. She backs away sharply from him after the touch and then the craziness ensures. Maybe he touched her because he was going to arrest her, maybe he touched her because he was being a jerk. Who knows.
The point is, this man is charged with protecting people…even people who are committing a horrible crime like jaywalking. He absolutely should have used tactics other than wrestling with a teen girl, grabbing her by the neck and punching one in the face. If them running was going to be such a huge issue, he could have called for backup or issued a report. I guarantee, they would have been found.
But a grown man punching a teenager in the face is simply not okay. These girls weren’t fighting back so much as they were trying to get away. They weren’t hitting him, they were evading him. Big difference there.
I do not understand why it is so important to arrest someone for J walking. I guess in Seattle this is a felony? I think that in this country people enjoy watching Black get treated violently. I’m glad there are some good comments on this because I can’t believe people would say it was OK to and in the right of the cop to do this to anyone, CHILD or not! Yes I totally understand her and the friend were getting loud with an officer of the law but there are too many cops that just want to make it difficult on peoples lives. you are a cop you stop and you see a guy Jaywalking (yes its simple everynody does it BUT its still a law) you stop him and you are TALKING TO HIM it didnt say he was issuing a ticket just talking… so you see a group of ladies who did the exact same thing you ask them to step aside soyou could SPEAK to them one goes crazy begins to curse at you and starts to walk away you tell her to stop and come step to the side… she refuses you follow and tell her again… she resist.. at that point if you let her go people are gonna begin to feel like they can just run all over the police and that they dont get any respect so you MUST apprehend her… she begins to resist and push you off and now there is a crowd of people swarming around you are the only police officer there you have already put a radio call for backup you dont know how this may escalade so while shes resisting there is another LADY (not 17 yr old) coming up and begin to jump in this now your scared and nervouse because she pushes you (as you see in the viideo) so you back up and you strike her ( it was a clean hit not a brutal kick or even a knockout punch) and then you continue to try your best and apprehend her…..

If you want to avoid assault on a female charge join your local police force. Tired of discussing these type of violations, every body so mad u have to do something about it.
Everyone is blaming him, but hell what about what she did. It may have been overboard but it looks like he was under attack and it was totally not necessary for them to behave this way. But again like always their behavior is being excused because he was a little excessive. I think it was a natural reaction so honestly it will be a lesson learned for her I bet she does not try to ramble with another police officer again!
The moral of the story is, never place your hands or resist any type of situation with law enforcement. Does not matter who is right. time and time again, and most recently in the Bay Area, some kid got pulled over by the cops and went to reach for his cell phone and got shot! Police come across all kinds of people and can be trigger happy, so I wouldn’t be jerking away or putting my hands on anyone. None of this is a race issue it is an issue of the youth of America today they don’t have any respect for authority figures this is the issue. Its not just one state its all 50. If this is a race issue its a race issue against the police officers not getting the respect they deserve we do pay there saleries to serve and protect now quit acting like fools and let them do there jobs. An officer has a firearm, that female, who is a 17 year old woman, pushed the officer and who knows what actions she was willing to take after that. I would absolutely go into a defensive posture and try to subdue an individual who placed their hands on me when I had a weapon that could be taken from my person. He punched.. because he was in an adrenaline filled situation and it was probably the quickest way to subdue the individual.
Discression does need to be utilized by the law enforcement in the community. But lets be honest. This is not about jaywalking or race.. it is about an officer who was trying to issue a citation when another subject interjected and placed her hands on the officer. Then, the situation got out of hand, to a minor degree. He could have absolutely tased that female for what she did.. regardless of age..Notice.. she is about as big as him.. AND there were other people around.. the situations could have become much more grave.

I am on the fence about the whole incident. I DO understand that the officer may have felt threatened. Both of the girls were pretty aggressive. However, I do not think the proper response was to punch her in the face. I think that was outrageous. Like may people have said, the officer should have called for backup. That way the situation would have been under control before it advanced to that level. Was the girl wrong? Absolutely. Did he HAVE to punch her in her face? I do not believe that was necessary.

First of all, if a crime was in fact committed then all who broke the law should have been stopped. The young caucasion female said it clearly, why didn’t he stop her?second, its not protocol to manhandle people which is why the young lady seemed to step in. Next, I then see them speaking to the friend of the 2 women (who are African American) and their friend, who is by chance a “white female” agrees that the officer over reacted. I’ve seen Jaywalking stops and 9 out of 10 times they’ll tell you not to do it again (slap on the wrist). This is when the video pops up.
