Azelaia Banks is no stranger to controversy. She is known for voicing her sometimes unpopular opinion with little to no shame. Given her resume, none of us thought we’d see the day she’d break down in tears! Check out the details below!
First K Michelle, then Nicki Minaj, now Azealia Banks. In the past week, all of these Pop divas have suffered from serious emotional breakdowns on air. Though K Michelle and Nicki’s breakdowns were man related, Azealia’s breakdown held a little more weight. Interviewers know by now that if they want some good material, that they’d better ask Banks about Iggy Azalea. Iggy has managed to become Banks’ arch nemesis over time, and unfortunately, things have only gotten worse. Banks has accused Iggy of everything from being a fraud to being a terrible rapper. But yesterday, when Banks sat down with Hot 97, the outspoken rapper took more of a political stand, which eventually brought the pop star to tears.
“I feel like, in this country, whenever it comes to our things, like black issues or black politics or black music or whatever, there’s always this undercurrent of kinda like a ‘F— you,’” she said. “There’s always a ‘F— y’all n—as. Y’all don’t really own shit. Y’all don’t have shit.’ That Macklemore album wasn’t better than the Drake record. That Iggy Azalea shit isn’t better than any f—ing black girl that’s rapping today.”
Before she went on to talk about the deaths of Mike Brown and Eric Garner, she said she feels like Black culture is being exploited.
“Until y’all mother—-ers ready to talk about what you owe me…at the very f—ing least you owe me my identity and to not exploit that shit.”
The rapper didn’t stop there. She even went as far as calling T.I. a “coon” for promoting Iggy the way that he does. Banks, through her tears, said that there is a simple solution to the problem.
“Put [Iggy] in the pop category. Put her and Miley Cyrus in the same fu**in’ box together. Don’t put her in hip-hop. Just because she’s singing, does not mean she’s rap music.”
And before it was all over, Banks threw in her two cents about the recent Grammy nominations. Needless to say, she wasn’t pleased.
“When they give these Grammys out, all it says to white kids is, ‘You’re great. You’re amazing. You can do whatever you put your mind to.’ And it says to black kids, ‘You don’t have shit. You don’t own shit, not even the shit you created yourself.’ And it makes me upset.”
Some critics say that Banks needs to start making some classic music before she even attempts to talk about the Grammy’s. And maybe that’s true. But one thing’s for sure, this chic isn’t lacking in the passion department, not one bit! If she applies that same passion to her music, she could actually go really far!
