Beyoncé Hires First Black Vogue Photography For New Cover

Sources say Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is giving Bey absolute control over the upcoming September issue of the iconic fashion magazine. The September issue is historically known to be the most important cover of all fashion seasons. The last time Beyoncé graced that cover was 2015.

Due to a clause Beyoncé and her team use to keep her in control of the narratives painted around her image, sources alleged that Vogue is contractually responsible to give Bey that control. She will do everything Anna Wintour normally does for each issue: she will choose what she wears, she will choose what captions are written for each photo she takes, and most importantly – she’s hired 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell as the photographer.

He will be the first Black photographer in Vogue’s 126 year history to shoot a cover. On top of taking total control of the September issue, Beyoncé will not be granting them an interview.

The journalism industry spoke out in full-on praise of this historic first. Former BET host and writer Touré tweeted:

Music journalist Sowmya Krishnamurthy wrote:

Former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth posted excerpts from the Huffington Post article highlighting the announcement:

– all hail queen @beyonce
