A coroner’s report is bringing closure to the questions surrounding the death of music superstar Whitney Houston. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office issued a report Thursday listing “accidental drowning” as the cause of death. The report also said heart disease and cocaine use contributed to the singer’s untimely passing. Marijuana, Xanax and Benadryl were among other drugs that were found in Houston’s system but were not considered contributing factors in her death. Houston’s sister-in-law and manager Patricia Houston issued a statement saying the family was “saddened to learn of the toxicology results,” but glad to have some closure.
Craig Harvey of the coroner’s office said while Houston had a “moderate” amount of cocaine in her system, autopsy results suggested “chronic usage” of the drug which he said can, and in all likelihood did, in this case, create problems with the singer’s health. Harvey said, “Chances are had she not had the pre-existing heart disease and cocaine use she may not have drowned.” Houston was found underwater in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 11th, just hours before she was to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Whitney Houston was 48.
