Last year, the show hung on to its title of TV’s most-watched show as country crooner Scotty McCreery was crowned champ, but the ratings continued to slide as a number of similar shows made their debuts. Still, critics say competitors like “The X Factor” and “The Voice” aren’t likely to hurt “Idol’s” ratings since they’re all going after different audiences. Richard Rushfield is the author behind “American Idol: The Untold Story.” He tells MTV News “Idol” has clearly established itself as what he calls the “middle-American, older, feel-good, soft, non-threatening” singing competition.
