A $15 Million dollar settlement was arranged for the accusers in the Eddie Long sex scandal and now Eddie is saying he wants some of his money back. If you remember, earlier this year media coverage revealed a sexual misconduct lawsuit against the Lithonia, Georgia pastor filed against him by 5 younger male members of his own congregation.
They accused the pastor of using his influence to coerce them into sexual relations. According to the lawsuits, Long took advantage of them by offering jobs, gifts, the opportunity to meet and mingle with celebrities and even trips overseas with him and his entourage. In fact, it was on some of those trips abroad that the accusers allege some of the sexual misconduct took place. After the settlement a few of the accusers conducted interviews and even spoke about writing a book about the experiences which was against their initial contract. Bishop Long’s attorney’s from the law firm Drew Eckl & Farnham are looking to recover nearly $1 million from that settlement, sending letters to three of the five men saying they violated the agreement by speaking out publicly about the case in interviews.
The firm is seeking at least $900,000 already paid the three accusers [Jamal Parris, Spencer LeGrande and Centino Kemp], according to people involved in the settlement but not authorized to speak publicly. That figure is a portion of the total settlement with the three men.
Financial terms of that settlement have not been disclosed but, based on the letter and the fact each of the young men were paid equitably, the total comes to at least $1.5 million.
The letter outlines the plaintiffs’ “demand for arbitration†though no legal documents have yet been filed.
These letters are not considered legal documents as of yet so the documents appear to only be threats right now. None of the accusers have made any comments concerning the letters. When settlement was first released Bishop Long is quoted saying he hoped “to bring closure to this matter and to allow us to move forward with the plans God has for this ministry.â€
Interesting. What do you think of Bishop Eddie Long trying to get some of his money back?
