Exclusive Photos: Frank Ski’s Kids Foundation Local Legends Luncheon

This past weekend the Frank Ski Kids Foundation hosted the Local Legends Luncheon at Frank Ski’s Restaurant & Lounge. The Local Legend Luncheon Scholarship Program rewards and spotlights deserving senior young ladies and her high school and also gives her a lasting memory as she dines with local legends like Xernona Clayton, Monica Pearson, Keisha Knight-Pulliam, Pearl Cleage and Valerie Jackson. The ladies who are apart of the luncheon are exceptional students who are selected for a celebrity lunch by the Frank Ski Kids Foundation to recognize the top outstanding high school students.  The lunch honored Pearl Cleage and Valerie Jackson.

The event was hosted by Tanya Ski, Pearl Cleage and Valerie Jackson gave insight to the girls on what it takes to become a successful, strong women.

Certificates of recognition were provided to each girl along with a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to help toward their college application fees, and tuition.

The students selected were: Tylon Moore, Mundy’s Mill High School, Clayton County Schools; India McCoy, McEachern High School, Cobb County Schools and Bria Delane, McEachern High School, Cobb County Schools.

 

Pearl Cleage is an Atlanta based writer whose work has won commercial acceptance and critical praise in several genres. An award winning playwright whose Flyin’ West was the most produced new play in the country in 1994, Pearl is also a best selling author whose first novel, What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day, was an Oprah Book Club pick and spent nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Her subsequent novels have been consistent best sellers and perennial book club favorites. I Wish I Had A Red Dress, her second novel, won multiple book club awards in 2001. Some Things I Never Thought I’d Do, was a “Good Morning America!” book club pick in 2003, and Babylon Sisters made the ESSENCE Magazine best seller list in 2005. Her most recent novel, Baby Brother’s Blues, was the first pick of the new ESSENCE Book Club and an NAACP Image Award winner for fiction in 2007.

 

Valerie Richardson Jackson is known for the many hats she wears, both figuratively and literally. Her life embodies an innovative spirit and a list of firsts for African American women. She was among the first African Americans hired as a telephone operator by the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company while still a student at the high school she and her two brothers integrated in the early sixties; dealing with daily harassment and intimidation. With a B.S. in Business Management from Virginia Commonwealth University, she established the first clerical training program for the Neighborhood Youth Corps in Richmond, Virginia. Upon being offered a scholarship, she earned an MBA from the prestigious Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania. As a Marketing Account Executive with Grey Advertising in New York and Regional Marketing Supervisor for Trans World Airlines, also headquartered in New York, she was the first African American to hold either position. Currently, she serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of Jackmont Hospitality, Inc., a foodservice management company, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

 

The Frank Ski Kids Foundation, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Frank Ski, host of top-rated morning show V-103 (CBS affiliate) & his wife, Tanya Ski.  The Ski’s greatest philanthropic venture has a mission of Exposing Kids to Their Future through science, technology, athletics and the arts and believes that “if they never see it, they will never want to be it”. The Frank Ski Kids Foundation Exposes Kids to their Future and meets this mission by embracing  youth and their value while offering pathways and hands-on opportunities that promote optimal growth, self-expression, ingenuity, achievement and learning vital to their ambitions.
