Rapper Fat Joe, who is well-known for his popular club banger, “Lean Back”, and his collaborative effort with Ja Rule and Ashanti on the hit song, “What’s Love?”, was sentenced to four months in prison on Monday in federal court in Newark, New Jersey for failing to pay his taxes. Fat Joe, whose government name is Joseph Cartagena, pleaded guilty in December to failing to pay taxes on more than $1 million of income he earned between 2007 and 2010.
Federal prosecutors stated that Fat Joe failed to pay about $700,000 in taxes on earnings of $3.3 million between 2007 and 2010. Even though he lives in Miami Beach, Fat Joe was prosecuted in New Jersey because he owns corporations based in Somerville from which he received income, including Terror Squad Productions Inc. and Miramar Music Touring Inc.
Fat Joe is the latest artist in a string of musicians who have recently been sentenced to jail or prison time for tax evasion. Singer Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in prison in early May for failing to pay taxes on about $1.8 million. Two weeks later, the IRS placed a lien on property belonging to Mary J. Blige and her husband, alleging that they owed $3.4 million in back taxes. R&B singer Kelis has a tax lien for allegedly failing to pay $134,931.59 in taxes in 2004 which brings her to a total owed of $741, 027.59.
