“Finding Dory,” which comes 13 years after its predecessor, racked in a whopping $136.2 million in North American theaters. According to comScore, it has knocked “Shrek the Third” out of its spot, becoming the highest-grossing animated debut of all time. “Shrek the Third” (2007) debuted with $121.6 million. The Pixar sequel also broke records for the studio’s biggest opening. “Toy Story 3” was the previous record-holder, with a $110.3 million open.

Analysts expected a big open for the film, but were still shocked by the numbers.
