Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in prison for corruption. That’s an epic fall from the top. Check out the details below.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave: When first we practice to deceive!  Kwame Kilpatrick will have 28 years to reflect on his tangled web of politics, deception, and sex. It sounds like a really good movie or one of those made for BET movies. Either way it goes it’s a say day for the big homie Kwame Kilpatrick, who served as mayor from 2002 until fall 2008. During those 6 short years Kwame’s web got tangled with bank accounts full of money from the City of Detroit, private trips, and crimes of the ratchet sort. Kwame has taken responsibility for his actions and told the judge,

“I’m ready to go so the city can move on. The people here are suffering, they’re hurting. A great deal of that hurt I accept responsibility for.”

In March, Kilpatrick was convicted of racketeering conspiracy, fraud, extortion and tax crimes better known as the “Kilpatrick Enterprise,”. The “Kilpatrick Enterprise was a years long scheme to shake down contractors and reward allies. He might have gotten away with him crimes if he used the telephone instead of sending text messages. People talk about Facebook but text message can truly ruin your life. His texts revealed efforts to help his home boy Bobby Ferguson, an excavator who got millions of dollars in city work through the water department.

Contractors confessed they were forced to take on Ferguson as a partner or risk losing lucrative deals. The government alleged that he in turn shared cash with Kilpatrick. It was discovered that Kwame bank accounts and credit cards reflected a man who made much more money than his $840,000 salary. The extra money is believed to be generous gifts from political supporters who opened their wallets for birthdays or holidays. Kilpatrick was also guilty of dipping into a nonprofit fund created for help distressed Detroit residents, to pay for yoga, camps for his kids, golf clubs and travel.

Judge Nancy Edmunds said the following before giving Kwame 28 years,

“A man with the charisma and ability of Mr. Kilpatrick chose to use his talents on personal aggrandizement and enrichment when he had the potential to do so much for the city.”

The sentence was a victory for prosecutors, who had recommended Kilpatrick serve at least 28 years in prison, while defense attorneys argued for no more than 15 years.

Kwame had the following to say before his sentence,

“I just humbly and respectfully ask for a fair sentence … I respect the jury’s verdict. I think your honor knows I have disagreed in terms of the specific things I was found guilty on, but I respect the verdict and I also respect the American justice system.”

Oh, what a tangled web we weave: When first we practice to deceive! The big homie will have a lot of time to think about his actions. What do you think?
