The 2016 BET Awards was epic and by far one of the best awards the Network has done so far. The show was hosted by “Black-ish” stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross who’s great chemistry and playfulness energized fans and prepared audiences at the Microsoft Theater and across the world for a fun show. The show was hot from start with Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar getting everyone in formation to the close out with the beautiful Sheila E honoring her mentor and friend Prince. I can recap the in between and share my behind the scenes photos after the break.
The 2016 BET Awards was epic. The show stared off with The lovely Beyonce and rapper Kendrick Lamar. Beyoncé and her dancers got the world in formation as she performed her very thought provoking song “Freedom” from her ‘Lemonade’ album, and Lamar joined her to perform his verse on the song. They splashed around in a pool of water with a very apocalyptic sort of fee. They killed it! Beyoncé walked away with Video of the Year and the Coke Viewers Choice Award.
BET paid tribute to the late icon Prince by spreading his celebration segments throughout the show. Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Billal, Jennifer Hudson, Janelle Monae, and Sheila E. paid tribute to Prince through electrifying performances of his hits. I feel that Price was pleased by the night’s tribute. Billboard Award take notice of how to tribute a legend.
The BET Awards brought it when it came to performances including Drake getting WICKED, Desiigner performing Panda live to a startled crowd. We got to go all the way up with Fat Joe and Remy Ma who’s killing it with their hot new single. R&B new comer Bryson Tiller who walked away with Best R&B/Pop Singer and Best New Artist performed his medley of hits to an excited audience. Alicia Keys looked naturally pretty as she reminded the world of her diversity of talent, and Usher made a strong statement with the performance of his hit new single “No Limit” featuring a full dance team and rapper Young Thug.
The winners of the evening included:
Drake and Future went on to win Best Group. Drake won the prize for Best Male Hip Hop Artist and Best Collaboration with Rihanna, for their track “Work.”
Beyoncé was voted Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, and her video for “Formation” won for Video Of The Year, the Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award, and the Centric Award.
Nicki Minaj won Best Female Hip Hop artist for the seventh straight year.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement award for his body of work in films and dope persona.
The Humanitarian Award went to actor and activist Jesse Williams for his contributions to the Black Lives Matter movement and he won everyone’s heart with his riveting acceptance speech. I say we vote Jesse L Williams for President!
