The man convicted of killing three members of singer Jennifer Hudson’s family is looking to get a new trial.
Attorneys for William Balfour say the Oscar winner’s testimony in the trial was “irrelevant” and say her celebrity unfairly influenced the jury’s decision to convict Balfour of the crimes.
They are expected to present their case to a Cook County judge next month.
Jennifer was the first witness to take the stand during Balfour’s trial. She told the court that no one in the family wanted her sister Julia to marry Balfour, adding that the family did not like the way he treated Julia. Balfour’s attorneys say most of the evidence that was presented at trial was circumstantial and not enough to peg Balfour as the killer of Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew in 2008.
He faces life in prison without a retrial.
