Global superstar singer Mariah Carey is in the hot seat as she faces a lawsuit claiming that she failed to fully compensate a former assistant for long hours worked.

According to an article from the New York Post’s Page Six website, singer Mariah Carey has been accused of “working her [a former employee] to the bone seven days a week without meal breaks or fair pay.” 49-year-old Ylser Oliver filed the suit in Manhattan, New York’s federal court. The article says that Oliver was responsible for various tasks including cleaning, shopping, taking care of the pop star’s “personal needs,” as well as “packing her suitcases with performance gear.” Oliver also says that she worked 16 hour days completing her duties but never received any overtime pay and ended her employment with Carey this past June.

An attorney for Oliver, Matthew Blit, informed Page Six that his client “put her family’s life on hold while tending to Mariah Carey’s family, and Mariah repaid her by underpaying her,” he said. “My client is a very hardworking woman who treated Mariah and her family like her own, working all hours of the day and night. Even celebrities are required to abide by the law.”

The article further explains that although it appears that Oliver is suing Carey “for a significant amount of money,” her attorney Brit declined to provide a specific amount. Additionally, a spokesperson for Carey, Cindi Berger, told Page Six, “I can’t comment on anything that I’m not aware of and we haven’t heard anything about this lawsuit.”
