Following the performance, Missy pointed out that the song is over 16-years old. She also thanked Kool and the Gang, who were on hand to receive this year’s Legend Award. Missy, Kim and Da Brat weren’t the only acts to pay homage to the group. A special tribute performance included appearances from MC Lyte, Tamar Braxton, Joe and Doug E. Fresh. The all-star salute was just one of the stunning performances during the awards ceremony. Jodeci reunited on stage to perform a medley of their hits, including “Freek’n You” and “U & I.” Among the other performers were Chris Brown, Tinashe and Kem.
Meantime, Chris Brown had a huge night, taking home three trophies. His hit “Loyal” earned him awards for Best Collaboration and Best Hip-Hop Song, as well as Best Dance Performance. Beyoncé wasn’t on hand for the awards show, but she grabbed the Album of the Year and the Chaka Khan R&B/Soul Female Artist awards. Among the other winners were Pharrell Williams, John Legend, Nico & Vinz and Trey Songz. Hosted by Wendy Williams, the 2014 Soul Train Awards were taped on November 7th at Las Vegas’ Orleans Arena and aired on BET and CENTRIC.
