For the first time in Soul Train Music Awards history, this year’s show was broadcast live on BET! The star-studded event was held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 17 and was hosted by actresses Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold. The pair opened the show with an upbeat, comedy-laced performance of some of Janet Jackson’s biggest hits produced by the legendary duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. 

Recognized this year as the Lady of Soul was the incomparable Gospel music powerhouse Yolanda Adams! Adams was on hand to perform a medley of her hits including “Open My Heart,” “The Battle is The Lord’s,” and “Victory.”  Legend Award recipients Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were honored by the likes of Sounds of Blackness, members of the S.O.S. Band, Morris Day, Jerome Benton, and more with a 10-minute tribute to their musical legacy!

Some of the show’s highlights were K. Michelle’s performance of her latest song “The Rain,” a modern take on the 1988 New Edition hit song “Can You Stand The Rain” written by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Queen Naija singing her new single “Good Morning Text,” and of course, the Soul Cypher featuring heavy hitters like Carl Thomas, Erykah Badu, and Anthony Hamilton.
