Oprah Winfrey is joining CBS News’ flagship newsmagazine “60 Minutes,” as a special contributor, the network announced Tuesday morning.
Winfrey, who hosted her iconic daytime talk program “The Oprah Winfrey Show” for 25 years before launching her own cable network, will join “60 Minutes” beginning in the fall of 2017.
“I am so psyched about it and I know that she is equally excited,”” CBS This Morning” co-host host Gayle King, who is also a close friend of Winfrey, said on the program Tuesday. “You know, she has said all the time that she doesn’t miss the day-to-day of the show, but what she does miss is storytelling and connecting with people — women in particular — and being able to meet and talk to them and interact with them. That’s what she really misses. So to me this is a perfect marriage.”
“The perfect storyteller for the perfect storytelling venue,” CBS This Morning host Charlie Rose said of the news.
In a statement, Winfrey said she has been an admirer of the Sunday night newsmagazine “since her days as a young reporter.”
“I’m so excited and proud to join forces with this historic news program, which for me represents the bastion of journalistic storytelling,” she said in a company statement. “At a time when people are so divided, my intention is to bring relevant insight and perspective, to look at what separates us, and help facilitate real conversations between people from different backgrounds.”
