Actress and singer Raven-Symoné has admitted that she used tanning beds to darken her complexion during the production of her former hit Disney show “That’s So Raven.”
Here are the details…
Raven-Symoné, former star of “The Cosby Show” and her own Disney sitcom “That’s So Raven,” will be one of the featured panelists in an OWN Network documentary, “Light Girls,” the sequel to 2011’s “Dark Girls.” During the documentary, Raven-Symoné admits that she was an excessive user of tanning beds about 3-4 times per week during her stint as the star of “That’s So Raven.”
She mentions that she had really gotten into tanning during the four year long “Raven” show and was doing so to “be pretty.” She recalls a situation where tanning use had started to interfere with the show’s production: “One of the lighting guys came up…he goes, “Raven I need you to stop tanning. You’re getting too dark, and we have to re-light the whole entire show.’ ”
This is certainly a shocking revelation because in the Black community, it is commonly more stereotypical that more value, notoriety, or beauty is given to those of a lighter complexion than a darker one. You can check out the entire documentary on OWN Monday, January 19 which will include appearances by singer KeKe Wyatt, journalist Soledad O’Brien, actress and singer Tatyana Ali, and more.
