Sources report The 88-year-old Roberts died in Gulfport, Miss., on Thursday night, Jeffrey W. Schneider, senior vice president of ABC News, said Friday.
The announcement of the death also was made on “GMA” on Friday morning.
“Robin arrived home with her sister, Sally-Ann, forging through flooded and blocked roads to be with her beloved mother in time to see her,” GMA Senior Executive Tom Cibrowski said in an email to the entire news division Thursday evening.
The Mississippi area was dealing with flooding from the effects of Hurricane Isaac.

Roberts announced on Thursday’s edition of the morning news show that the episode would be her last for a while. The 51-year-old news vet told viewers she chose to leave a day early to visit her ailing mother in Mississippi. Roberts is preparing to undergo a bone marrow transplant to treat the disease MDS. Her sister Sally-Ann Roberts will be her donor. She is expected to begin preparations for the procedure on Monday.
Roberts revealed back in June that she contracted MDS while battling breast cancer five years ago. There is no timetable for her return to “GMA” but she said during her emotional send-off Thursday that she would return as soon as she could.
