The Pat Summitt Foundation announced this morning that the legendary NCAA coach has passed away. Summitt was 64.

Her son, Tyler Summitt, added in a statement that his mother died peacefully in her sleep in Knoxville, surrounded by close family and friends.

Summitt has been battling with dementia since 2011. A year later, she left her coaching job at the University of Tennessee, though she still worked with the team, assuming the title “head coach emeritus.”

The Lady Vols and Summitt won eight national championships in the 38 seasons she worked as a coach. She also scored 1,098 career victories, which is more than any other Division I basketball coach, man or woman. In 1976, she won a silver medal in an Olympic women’s basketball tournament and later became the only U.S. Olympian to win medals as both a player and a coach. Summitt has also been named NCAA coach of the year seven times.

According to the obituary on the Pat Summitt Foundation website, a private service and burial will be held in Middle Tennessee. A public service to celebrate her life will take place on the campus of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville at the Thompson-Boling Arena. The details for that event will be shared at a later date.

Rest in peace, champion.
