Sheila Johnson Dogs Oprah TV Network “OWN”: Blackness Missing

Have you taken a look at Oprah’s OWN? Naturally some critics are certainly having a good-ol-time cracking on the media mogul’s new channel due to the lack of diversity, specifically Black faces. BET co-founder Sheila Johnson had a mouth full to say about it on NPR’s “Tell Me More.”

“The only advice that I say, let’s open up your circle a little bit more. You know, we love the Dr. Phils. We love the Suze Ormans. Let’s open up. There are other people. And there’s also African-American experts out there that I think she should start bringing on her show that can reach even a wider audience.”

Host, Michel Martin commented about the Whiteness on the programming and lack of diversity is a bit confusing to some.

“No. Yes,” replied Johnson. “And I think she really should do that and not be afraid to do it. There’s really a lot of great experts out there that really know the businesses at hand. And I’d like to see her open up her circle to do that.”

In the meantime, Oprah announced to her OWN team that she’s proud of the new venture and says this is “revelatory for her.”

“We couldn’t ask for more – we built it and they came,” Winfrey told Multichannel News Thursday night during an OWN dinner party. “My dream is that they continue to come. It’s a long process – it’s not about this weekend it’s about sustainability long term, but I’m pleased with the start.”

Shelia Johnson have every right to feel this way because when you think about it, Oprah has always catered to the white media and she will continue to do so until the day she dies. It’s like she’s afraid to venture out and do something for the blacks, like Obama ain’t scared to mingle with his own kind. Oprah is black and let her step out of line one time and the white folks gone remind her she is a N***ga. But to be honest Oprah may have the Own tv going on but to be honest the white man is the real body that is running it. All I gotta say is Oprah needs to not forget that her fans and supporters are not just white based. Follow me at NaturalbeautyEP and I will follow you.

Right out the gate she throw up the black card. Damn, the network just started. She does have to build up her line up just as any other newtork. There are show in the works. Anyway OWN was never said to be a “black network”. BET is the “black network” and hell they still lacking in areas.

I’d rather watch a channel that has diversity in it. There are a lot of channels on cable that is not worth my time depending on the show whether it caters to white or black people. I can not entertain ignorance of any kind (bad girls club, jersey shore, basketball wives). We all know Oprah favors white people. I would love to see her lend an olive branch to some black professionals. But Oprah is who she will be a puppet for the white man. All I can say is if you don’t like her show don’t watch it. What you dislike someone else loves it.

Oprah did it backwards, she was suppose to start with black shows then slowly move away from them as her network popularity grows; just like Fox, WB, and NBC all started with plenty of black shows to help build their audience and once the audiece was there they got rid of their black shows.

  12. Hello all,

First off, I love Ms. O because she came from nothing and became a self made power house. Her brand’s base is middle class white women so that who she should cater too. For instance, if you were in business to sell wheel chairs, you would not market your product to the NBA, NFL, and/or the MLB? So people please put on your business minds when analyzing Ms. Winfrey because her power transcends colors. Furthermore, I think people would have legitimate quips if Ms. Winfrey did not support black causes away from her business ventures. Black people need to recognize and fully understand what Oprah Winfrey accomplishments are past the money…she was able connect with a powerful market, own her own production studio, and become who she is based on intellect and not on her ability to sing, act, or play sports (no disrespect intended to those who do sing, act, or play sports)….WOW, what an accomplishment!!!! You go Ms. O.
