Shirley Temple’s first film, War Babies, debuted in 1932 and is known as the first film to bring her national attention and fame. Her career spanned over the next 18 years, where she sang and tap-danced her way into many of our hearts and homes. Shirley Temple’s name, almost synonymous with her iconic corkscrew curls (and even today a popular alcoholic beverage!) led her to work with many of the top names in Hollywood as a child, starring in a series of feature films with 20th Century Fox, and often outselling her adult star counterparts, like Clark Gable.
Temple rose to fame at the peak of the Great Depression and her lighthearted spirit and warm smile helped ease the pain of millions of Americans.
After retiring from Hollywood at 22, Temple married Charles Black, and later became a foreign diplomat, and served as U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.
