Famous poet, Maya Angelou had a mouthful to say about the inscription on the new statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. Designers of the memorial chose words from Martin Luther King’s speech that he gave at Ebenezer Baptist Church here in Atlanta back in 1968. The original quote from Dr. King states “If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.†However, what actually went on the memorial is ” I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness”. Maya Angelou, who is one of the listed Council of Historians to select inscriptions for the statue, is not happy about this at all. She thinks that the inscription is misleading and wants it changed.
