It looks as if the cancellation of Rosie O’Donnell’s OWN talk show was just the beginning of cutbacks at the Oprah Winfrey Network. The cable channel is laying off 30 staffers in what’s being described as a restructuring of the network’s operations in Los Angeles and New York. In a press release Winfrey said as CEO she has a responsibility to “chart the course for long-term success for the network” and that the layoffs are a “necessary next step.”

Winfrey took over as CEO and Chief Creative Officer of OWN eight months ago. Having struggled in the ratings during its first several months on air, OWN has been enjoying an upswing since September with Winfrey’s own series, “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” leading the charge. The show took the number one spot among all cable networks with its broadcast of Oprah’s interview with Whitney Houston’s family on March 11th. OWN announced the cancellation of “The Rosie Show” last Friday citing flagging ratings.

In the interview Gaga opened up talking about several topics, including her desire for her own Little Monsters, how she deals (or doesn’t) with the media, and the one thing that scares her. By comparison, all measured consumer magazines’ single-copy sales dropped 10 percent. Adweek reports….

The rep said that with the economy soft and the show ending, a dropoff in newsstand sales wasn’t a surprise and pointed out that newsstand sales of the January issue were up 28 percent to 825,000.
