Monday night, Radio One’s HOT 107.9 presented it’s 2008 Dirty Awards in Atlanta, Ga. The event was very nicely put together and despite a few mishaps, I enjoyed myself. “Hot” showed me so much love and invited me out, all the while giving me the scoop and exclusive on things.
This year’s show was craaazzzyy! Of course, I have the good and the bad for you. Good: All of the city’s major industry rappers were in attendance and really showed love: Ludacris, Rick Ross, Trina, Gorilla Zoe, Common, T.I., Keri Hilson, Princess and Diamond, Monica, and many, many more. The show honored artists for their services in the community, like T.I’s ’It’s Cool to be Smart’” program which helps uplift children in the community. This might be the only event put on by a radio station that honors top rap artists in the music game.
Unforteuntely, I have to report the bad: Folks got hurt! There were two SEPARATE altercations during the course of the show, (one case in which yours truly was pepper sprayed).
I have to say, sometimes these artists get so excited about all the extra stuff that comes along with the fame and they forget about the love of the music.
One thing was clear, these people have STRONG allegiances to their respective crews – Like warriors going to battle; And that’s just what happened at The Georgia International Congress Center.
Although I was peppered sprayed and can barely see through the tearing right now as I type, I had a great time! I wanna thank Hot for showing me love. P.S. Someone told me that milk is good for the eyes after being sprayed. Anybody know if that’s true?
On another note, as I was leaving, I heard one girl say “This is some ni**a s#!t.” And I thought, Nah this is some people sh!t. I don’t think that these events can be defined by race because it could have happened to any group of people. And I hate to the see hard work, time effort and energy of others go to waste and it is unfortunate that the negative event overshadowed the numerous positive ones.
