Hudson Family Murders: William Balfour Hoping To Get New Trial

The man convicted of killing three members of singer Jennifer Hudson’s family is looking to get a new trial.

 

Attorneys for William Balfour say the Oscar winner’s testimony in the trial was “irrelevant” and say her celebrity unfairly influenced the jury’s decision to convict Balfour of the crimes.

They are expected to present their case to a Cook County judge next month.

Jennifer was the first witness to take the stand during Balfour’s trial. She told the court that no one in the family wanted her sister Julia to marry Balfour, adding that the family did not like the way he treated Julia. Read More »

Jennifer Hudson, Sister Offer Prayers To William Balfour

Jennifer Hudson is extending a prayer to the man now convicted of killing her mother, brother and nephew in 2008.

 

In a statement released to E! Online after Friday’s verdict, the Oscar winner and her sister said they were grateful for the love and support they had received from people all over the world and offered prayers not only for their own family members still struggling with the loss, but for William Balfour and his family as well.

The statement read, in part,

“It is our prayer that the Lord will forgive Mr. Balfour of these heinous acts and bring his heart into repentance someday.”

Hudson broke down in tears in the court room Friday after a Chicago jury delivered a guilty verdict on all counts for Balfour. The 31-year-old faces life in prison when he is sentenced. His attorneys say they will appeal. Read More »

Jennifer Hudson, Sister Testify At Triple Murder Trial

Testimony in the trial for the man accused of killing members of Jennifer Hudson’s family is expected to resume this morning in Chicago. The first day of William Balfour’s trial began with Hudson who, as the prosecution’s star witness, was the first to take the stand. The Oscar winning actress and singer delivered emotional testimony while recalling the last time she saw her family before they were murdered in October 2008.
Hudson also told the court that no one in the family wanted her sister Julia to marry the man at the center of the trial.

 

Prosecutors say Balfour killed Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew in October 2008 after flying into a jealous rage over his estranged wife’s alleged relationship with another man.

 

Balfour has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Jennifer’s sister Julia also testified on Monday.

According to CBS Chicago, Julia told the court that her estranged husband called her while police were investigating the crime scene and told her that a friend named “Brittany” told him about the murders. Read More »
