Taylor Swift is not only topping the charts with her latest album, “1989”, she’s putting an exclamation point on it. Swift’s fifth studio album sold a staggering one-point-two-eight-million copies in its first week of sales to become the biggest sales week for an album since Eminem’s 2002 release “The Eminem Show.” That album sold one-point-three-million copies in its second chart week. Billed as her first “official” pop album, “1989’s” big debut followed a major promotional push that saw Swift popping up on television, radio and social media last week. She was even named “ambassador” of her newly adopted hometown of New York City.
Taylor celebrated her big debut on Instagram posting a video of herself lip-syncing to Kendrick Lamar’s rap track “Backseat Freestyle,” which includes the lyrics, “Damn I feel amazing.”
Taylor Swift is leading a takeover of the Billboard Hot 100 this week. Apart from selling one-point-three million copies of her new album “1989,” she has also bounced back to the top of the singles chart. “Shake It Off” has returned to number one, putting an end to the eight-week run of Meghan Trainor’s hit “All About That Bass.” Another four songs from “1989” have debuted on the Hot 100, including “Wildest Dreams,” “Style” and “Blank Space.” Previous releases like “Out of the Woods” and “Welcome To New York” remain on the chart as well.
“Blank Space,” which will serve as Taylor’s next single, also tops the Digital Songs chart with 155-thousand downloads. She now passes Rihanna to become the artist with the most number one digital debuts ever.
