Music producer Teddy Riley is speaking out in defense of Sony’s new Michael Jackson album, “Michael.” Riley says concerns over the authenticity of the vocals on the record are misguided, noting that he was forced to use a technology called Melodyne because Jackson is no longer with us. He explains, quote, “With the Melodyne we actually move the stuff up which is the reason why some of the vibrato sounds a little off or processed, over-processed. We truly apologize for that happening, but you are still hearing the true Michael Jackson.” Riley acknowledges that members of Jackson’s family are unhappy with the record, but says that’s because they didn’t “get the last say” on the project. Riley adds that he’s dedicated to protecting the singer’s legacy, proclaiming, quote, “I know it’s him, I know it’s great material.”
On Monday, Michael Jackson biographer Randy Taraborrelli told CBS’ “The Early Show” that the Jackson estate still has about 60 incomplete Michael Jackson songs. Taraborrelli says the estate plans to release the songs they believe Michael would want people to hear, noting that that probably includes another 17 to 20 tracks. Should another Michael Jackson record be released, Riley says he’d love to be a part of it. He states, quote, “If they will have me I will definitely be a part of it.” Sony’s new “Michael” album arrives in stores today.
