President Obama is poking fun at the controversy surrounding Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s recent trip to Cuba. At the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, the president used Jay-Z’s song “99 Problems” to make fun of the criticism leveled at him over the couple’s trip.
The president also riffed on the recent announcement that Jimmy Fallon will take over as host of NBC’s “Tonight Show.” Obama joked that when the Correspondents’ Association was considering late night comedian Conan O’Brien for the role of master of ceremonies, they were faced with an “age-old dilema” — give Conan the gig or wait for five years before giving it to Jimmy Fallon. Amid the mixture of laughs and jeers, the president admitted that the joke was “a little harsh.”
The Hollywood brass in the audience didn’t come away unscathed from Saturday night’s dinner. President Obama took aim at actor Michael Douglas for his role in Aaron Sorkin’s 1995 film “The American President,” asking Douglas directly what his secret was to making the role of President of the United States look so easy. Obama sarcastically questioned if it was because he was an actor in an “Aaron Sorkin liberal fantasy.”
