Wyclef Jean Says He Was Arrested For Absolutely Nothing” By LAPD After Mistaken ID

Rapper Wyclef Jean claims he was arrested by Los Angeles police for “absolutely nothing.” Jean, 47, posted video of officers putting him in handcuffs after he says he was mistaken for a man who robbed a nearby gas station.

“LAPD another case of mistaken identity. Black man with red bandana robbed a gas station as I was in the studio working but im in handcuffs?” he wrote on Twitter, along with video showing him up against a cop car.

The Fugees founder documented his arrest, noting that they removed his Haitian flag and had him in cuffs.

A robbery occurred at a West Hollywood gas station around 1 a.m. where a suspect robbed a person at gunpoint and stole their wallet, according to authorities.

The victim provided a description of the vehicle and of the robber to authorities and officers spotted Jean’s vehicle, which fit the description of the robber, the Los Angeles Police Department told the Daily News.

Jean not only had a similar appearance to the suspect, but he also had a red bandana like the suspect,” Sgt. Walker told The News.

Officers ultimately determined that the music artist was not a suspect and he was “immediately released” after he was briefly detained, according to Walker.

Jean said that he was cuffed before being given the opportunity to identify himself.

“I was asked by the police to put my hands up,” he tweeted on Tuesday morning.

“Then I was told do not move. I was instantly hand cuffed before being asked to identify myself. Nor was I told why I was being cuffed. In the process I said my name and told them they have wrong person,” he continued.

Jean revealed on Twitter that he felt like he was treated like a criminal.

“I was appalled by this behavior of the LAPD,” he added.

The rapper was in a studio in North Hollywood with fellow artist T-Baby prior to the arrest, T-Baby said Jean left the studio around to head back to his hotel around 1 a.m. and the video of the arrest was shared around 2 a.m.

“Next I hear there’s police with guns and he’s in handcuffs for ‘mistaken identity’ because he’s black and wearing a ‘bandana’ aka a Haitian flag,” T-Baby told the Daily News. “This story is sad and redundant. When did guns and handcuffs become a perquisite (sic) of questioning?
