The Black Eyed Peas are set to perform during the halftime break of next year’s Super Bowl. In so doing, the chart-topping group will be bringing back a modern pop presence to one of television’s most-watched events. The Peas’ Super Bowl appearance marks a return to a younger representation of halftime performers, several years after the infamous Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake wardrobe malfunction. That eye-popping moment briefly exposed Jackson’s breast, triggering numerous complaints and a costly fine for 2004 Bowl broadcaster CBS which continues to fight the penalty with appeals. Until the Black Eyed Peas’ announcement on Thursday, the NFL had noticeably skewed older in enlisting performers to shore up its Super Bowl halftime entertainment. Seasoned acts such as The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Paul McCartney have been tapped in recent years to entertain football fans at the mid-game break.
Super Bowl 45 is scheduled to take place on February 6th at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Black Eyed Peas’ new album, “The Beginning” is due out in stores on Tuesday, November 30th.
