Jay-Z’s tribute song to his newborn daughter wasn’t a spur of the moment idea. Hip-hop producer Pharrell Williams explains to MTV News that he and Jay had worked on “Glory” before Blue Ivy Carter’s birth. Pharrell says “Glory” is their version of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” stating that they were just trying to “capture a moment in time.” Pharrell adds that he also recorded a song following the birth of his child, but kept it under wraps because he’s “more quiet and private” about his life than Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Jay-Z released “Glory” shortly after his daughter’s birth on January 7th. The track featured a clip of Blue Ivy crying, thus making her the youngest person to ever appear on a Billboard chart when “Glory” opened at number 74 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list.
