Following the grand jury’s decision not to bring charges against New York police officers involved in the chokehold death of Eric Garner on Wednesday, people flocked to the streets and their social media accounts to voice their opinions. However, in an interesting turn of public protest, the Twitter hashtag #crimingwhilewhite seemingly took over timelines with Caucasian people confessing to crimes they committed but were not reprimanded for.
Numerous tweets were (and are still being posted as the hashtag is currently trending) posted from white people across the nation who confessed to getting away with various crimes. As a result, another conversation emerged that focused on the sad reality that whites in the United States seem to have privilege and immunity over minorities, especially the Black minority. Many people, blacks and whites, were surprised to see these confessional tweets and welcomed this newer conversation between the races, hoping that this open realization would spark some sort of change.
