In the midst of Rihanna’s crazy life, boyfriend Matt Kemp provides an oasis of calm. “I’m so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it’s so easy,” the pop star, 22, says of her relationship with the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder, 25, in Elle’s July issue.
With all the demands made of the young singer in her already-megawatt career, Rihanna says it’s nice to have someone to mellow out with. “I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace,” she says. “It keeps me sane, really, talking to him and talking to my family.”
The two were introduced through friends last November, and by early January were vacationing together in Mexico. In April, Rihanna said the relationship was “nothing too serious,” and added: “I just want to have fun, and that’s what it’s about.” In the Elle interview, Rihanna also looks back at her time with Chris Brown – a relationship that was the opposite of calm at times, and ended after he assaulted her in February 2009.
“A year ago, I was very confused,” she says. “Because he was my best friend. All of a sudden, one night changed our whole lives – not only our friendship, but our lives.”
But she has no regrets about moving on. “I wanted to wake up one day and just not have that pain anymore,” she says. “I wanted to be with him again or get over him – it was either-or. I just didn’t want to feel the pain, the confusion.”
