Serena Williams won the Australian Open, adding the number 19 to her amount of Grand Slam victories!
Tennis superstar Serena Williams was able to garner her 19th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open where she defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 7-5 (5). Williams’ victory in Melbourne, Australia was her 16th against Sharapova, who hasn’t been able to top Williams on the tennis court in 11 years.
Williams, 33, comes in second among Grand Slam title winners in the Open era and is now the oldest woman to win the tournament. She only trails tennis legend Steffi Graf who has won 22 Grand Slam titles.
Williams was very gracious and humbled in her trophy acceptance speech:
“Standing here with 19 championships is something I never thought would happen. I went on the court with a ball and a racket and a hope. It’s inspiring for those of you out there who want to be something or for whatever you want to do when you grow up. You never know who you’re going to inspire; so I’m so honored.“
Congratulations to Serena Williams on this amazing win and here’s hoping she can surpass Steffi Graf’s record!
