“Think 2wice” Reaches Out To Community!

Mary Pat Hector

African-American men are affected the most when it comes to gun violence in America. A scary statistic that many tend to overlook; however, Mary-Pat Hector, refuses to let that statistic by implementing the “Think 2wice” Campaign!

Check out the details below!

The “Think 2wice” Campaign is a powerful movement that has been put in place by a high school student named Mary-Pat Hector. Although, she is only 16, she is making a big impact on her community. It is her mission is to encourage young people to think twice before pulling the trigger.

Yesterday, Hector, along with a group of other teenagers, came together to host an event for the community. It was to formally introduce the campaign; introduced the mission, spoke about the statistics of gun violence (on black men), shared stories, and ways to help out.

Many would be shocked to know that she has donated $10,000 of her college fund to buy billboard ads to get the word about the initiative out. A move that even she admitted was a risk, but one she was happy to take.

This was pretty risky and Spelman is a good $40,000 (something) a year, but I will put up more if I have to. I have learned that no one is going to invest in you, if you don’t invest in yourself. I took this leap of faith and I will take more…as long as I can reach out to one person, then I have done my job.

The audience was able to listen to the stories of mother’s who lost their sons. One mother that I had the opportunity to speak with was Lucile McBath. She was the mother of Jordan Davis. A young teen who was shot and killed because he was playing his music too loud. I tragic story that took place just months after the shooting of Trayvon Martin.

We discussed the new gun law that was recently passed by Governor Nathan Deal and how even more important the “Think 2wice” Campaign is now.

It is imperative (to get the message out)! It is absolutely imperative! I have said it earlier today that is ‘Gun Armageddon!’ Because we have watched statistically what happened in the state of Florida since these laws have been enacted and we have superseded Florida in our guns laws. You see what happened there with the ‘Stand Your Ground Law?’ Trust me! It will happen here! Statistics, I guarantee you, will rise about what is called ‘justifiable homicide.’ And it is truly going to affect minorities like it has done (already) across the country.

Speakers of the night

Hector believes that she can be a voice for the young people when it comes to stopping gun violence. “A lot of adults pay attention to the statistics, but do you actually know it?” She explained, “Letting adults know what is going with young people…and it is different when it is coming from someone of the same age.”

It is an amazing thing to meet such a selfless young woman, who is will stop at nothing to make a change in this world. Hector is not afraid to ruffle feathers of elected officials, which was proven during her close-out speech. “When I think about how many elected officials said they would attend and how many did really. Proves just what our local government feels about the issue of gun violence in our city.” However, she will not let that affect her and the mission that she has began. Big up’s to Hector and the group of teens who worked effortlessly to see this campaign come to life.
