What Did You Think About BET Black Girls Rock? + All The Video

blackgirlsrock

(11/8/2010) BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been dedicated to the healthy development of young women and girls for over 4 years. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. seeks to build the self-esteem and self-worth of young women of color by changing their outlook on life, broadening their horizons, and helping them to empower themselves (www.BET.com.). KeKe Palmer set the industry straight on Black Girls Rock. She said that you don’t have to dance all over the screen half naked to get a role. She has next in my book. Sometimes it seems as media is a two edged sword…. one end we will show the videos that some view as negative but then they put on award shows like Black Girls Rock that promotes the opposite.

The program was great, however Keisha Cole and Keri Hilson’s contribution was a step back. The songs that they performed were in opposition to the spirit of “Black Girls Rock”. Other than that, the show was major and overdue- good job, BGR!

  2. LaTanya says:

Loved all of it but, the best was the four women performance with Jill, Ledisi, Kelly and Marsha!

  3. faye says:

The show wasn’t that good to me monica and jill scott were great !

  4. melinda says:

How seroius is Black Girls Rock rockin with Fantasia? They don’t have to not like her or her music but having her perform seems like they condone her drama. Ending the show with a woman who tried to kill herself over SOMEBODY’S ELSE HUSBAND……defeated the supposed point of the show’s title or purpose. Really…how does that work?

  5. IAMAQUEEN says:

@MELINDA….Do you think Fantasia is the first person to have done something like that. Honey, did you not listen to anything the people were saying in there speeches. Life is a about getting back up after you have fallen. Fantasia made a mistake like everyone else in the world. Look in the mirror and when you life is the mirror of perfection is the only time you should belittle anyone.

  6. pecangirl says:

I think Fantasia shut the show down! Everyone seem to be in good spirit & that’s what counts and they enjoyed them selves. I think the show was assume and way over due, lets make it bigger & better next year because ( BLACK GIRLS REALLY DO ROCK)!!!!!!!!

  7. Charlene says:

I totally agree with you, IAMAQUEEN. Melinda, it seems like you were more interested in who was bringing the message, instead of the message itself. You and I both know that you have done some things in your past and recent past that are not pleasing to others, but yet and still, you are forgiven. People still listen to you, acknowledge you and probably laugh at your jokes, that may not be funny. Those people have forgiven Fantasia for her faults and again, that’s a message in itself, altogether. So, before you start speaking, make sure it’s meaningful and necessary. Did you gain anything by commenting about Fantasia? I don’t think so. Black Girls Rock…..and so do you, believe that!

I honestly couldn’t believe that Bet showed something positive and motivational. I loved seeing the living legend ruby dee she is she is still one of the best role models out there. I enjoyed most of the performances except for keyshia cole. But all in all it was a great performance and hopefull BET will have more positive shows like these around.

  9. melinda says:

The bible says there is a time and place for everything. Fantasia was a distasteful distraction to the message to not only myself, but others as I have discussed it thourhout the day. My comment is not against Fantasia getting a second chance, being forgiven, or never being allowed to perform again. She just should have been on at a later time in her life once she shows progress and growth like real women (black and white and us biracial folks like myself) who rock do. They change and grow. We all make mistakes but some of us learn from them. She acted, looked as wild and “ghetto” as she’s been presenting herself. It seems her season is not in harvest yet so why not wish her the best without giving her a platform. If that’s not too deep for you guys to understand

  10. Lamartz says:

I usually don’t comment on post but I had to this time around!

@Melinda, are you serious? Like you never did anything in your LIFE that you weren’t proud of. You have to give her a DAMN brake, she messed up and that’s just it. MOVE ON!! Things happen. I bet you got stuff in your closet that nobody else knows that if they did they will look at you different.

@michael, every song wasn’t empowering there still “BLACK GIRLS WHO ROCK” who made it from where they were to where they are now. They made something of themselves so that’s why the performed!

  11. tee says:

Im glad it didn’t take place in ghetto atl cause it would have been trashy

  12. www.twitter.com/IamCourtneyLuv says:

I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, it is a time and place for everything.

  13. LAYLA says:

That performance with Ledisi, Jill Scott, Ambrosia, and Kelly Price was phenomenal! I watched it at least 5 times. I loved the show, I think it was very uplifting for black women. Cant wait to watch next year.

  14. KIM says:

i think ppl noticing that kc is more of a studio artist,

  15. likeCAESAR says:

I only watched a portion of it. I think Keke Palmer’s image is contrived and its only a matter of time before she’s running round half naked. And honestly I’ve seen her dressed in short short mini skirts and loub’s lookin all kinds of grown. Fuckin…hypocrites…

@Melinda…I see your point but what did you expect? Monica is no role model running around dating “thugs” and glorifying it like its cool cause she’s a selfprofessed “hood chick”. GTFOH.

I guess the message is good. The show was decent from what I saw.

  16. likeCAESAR says:

LOL @ Keyshia Cole….she swear she be killing it. LOL. Can’t nobody tell her she don’t be blowing…lol. Bitch aint been on key since she should’ve cheated…

  17. California says:

Over all I really enjoy the show. It was very positive and motivational. If was my show I would have chosen a different name for it!! because I believe ALL woman rock!s!! just saying. I am not one to judge because I’m not God, but we all are human beings and have made mistake in our lives that we are not proud of, so did Fantasia. The only thing her mistake was aired for everyone to see.

  18. heather says:

i know one think i could not wait for the show to start.–and i know everone was nervous, however they all did very good…i hope there will be more shows like that and the show should be shown through out the world –because all people no matter what color should see the accomplishments of people of color.( and there are some people of color that came from drugs and still reach the top or still trying….find someone like that.———t sorry that may be small in the movie world but it touch more people that you cant even imagine

  19. heather says:

i wish someone would help me write a story on me

  20. vision says:

Melinda, do you really know the bible, if so you know it’s not our pace to judge, and I’m sure you have been given a second chance, my sista.

  21. Aminah says:

I’m sorry, but i’m just shocked that no one has commented on this. WHY in the hell is this show called “Black GIRLS Rock” when the majority of females who were celebrated (Exluding Keke Palmer) were not girls, but in fact grown ass women? I can’t be the only one who sees the disrespect in the title. If BET decided to air an awards show about the acheivements of black men, i strongly doubt they would allow them to call it “Black Boys Rock”. If calling a black man a “Boy” is seen as extremely disrespectful, then how could BET find this acceptable? Basically what that says is “Just because you’ve worked your ass off to get to where you are, and have acheived much more than most in their lifetime…. Your still a “Girl”, and you don’t deserve the respect to be adressed as an adult female. Even Nia long refered to first lady Michelle Obama as a “Girl”. This women is 46… if entering your 40’s does not warrant being called a woman, then i really don’t know what does. If BET wants to air an awards show about the our important and prestigious acheivements in society, i think that’s awesome, but please stop dumbing it down and portraying it in some “Girly”, immature, light just to make certain people comfortable. Maybe they wanted to make the show light and “Fun” in it’s spirit, but i take the acheivements of my fellow black women VERY seriously, i just wish BET and others would as well.

  22. DOROTHY KASHK says:

WATCHING BLACK GIRL ROCK FOR THE FIRST TIME WAS VERY INTRESTING .
I THINK THE SHOW WAS GREAT AND FOR THOSE THAT THOUGH NEGATIVE WERE UPPIED
THAT WHAT BLACK ROCKS IS ALL ABOUT.NO MATTER WHAT THE SITUATION WAS OR IS. . BLACK GIRLS ROCK IS ABOUT YOU KNOWING YOUERSELF AND WHAT YOU DO FOR YOURSEL. NO ONE CAN SAY THEY HAD OR HAVE A GREAT. LIKE. GOD SAID IN THE BIBLE THAR ANYONE WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE? PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THE PROGRAM FOR I WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE IT AGAIN TO WATCH ALL THE ACHEIVEMENT THAT BLACK WOMEN HAVE/DONE,
