THE 2017- 2018 PRODUCTIONS
Holler If Ya Hear Me
Sept 12 – Aug 8, 2017
By Todd Kriedler | Music by Tupac Shakur
Directed by Kenny Leon
An American Musical inspired by the music and lyrics of late rapper Tupac Shakur. The music of one of the 20th century’s most influential and culturally prominent voices comes to life in this non-biographical musical about friendship, family, revenge, change, and hope. ‘On my block we still pray’ is the heart of this moving original musical. Inner city lives struggle for peace against the daily challenges as we peak into a window of realities on the streets still relevant with issues our society faces today.
King Hedley II
Feb 13 – Mar 11, 2018
By August Wilson
Directed by Jamil Jude
It’s 1985 in the backyard of an urban Pittsburg neighborhood staunch with decay. King Hedley II is an ex-con desperately trying to make a new life for himself selling stolen refrigerators. Scraping at the dirt, King spends a lot of time trying to plant seeds where nothing can grow. This becomes the perfect metaphor for his life as his dreams are doomed to a violent end. In Wilson’s darkest and most symbolic play, King Hedley II is the eighth play in August Wilson’s American Century Cycle, a haunting and challenging tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.
Dot
Jul 17 – Aug 12, 2018
By Colman Domingo
Directed by Kenny Leon
In the Shealy house, Christmas means time for family gatherings. Only this holiday, Dotty and her three grown children gather with more than the holiday spirit in mind. As Dotty struggles to hold on to her failing memory, her children must fight to balance care for their mother and care for themselves. Crackling with humor, this lucid comedy grapples aging parents, midlife crises, and the heart of an urban West Philly neighborhood
