Ruby Dee opened doors of opportunity for so many people in the entertainment industry. Her poise, class and activism shaped the world and opportunities that we enjoy today. I am sad to hear about her sudden passing. I don’t have any details about what happened. Her daughter Nora Davis Day told The Associated Press on Thursday that her mother died at home at New Rochelle, N.Y., on Wednesday night. Ruby Dee was surrounded by family and friends as she exited out of this world and on to the next.

Ruby Dee had a very long career in the entertainment business. She frequently acted alongside her husband the late great Ossie Davis. In addition to being a fixture in American cinema she was nominated for an Oscar at the tender age of 83 for best supporting actress for her role in the 2007 film American Gangster. She also won an Emmy and was nominated for several others. Ruby Dee did not let age or the loss of her beloved husband slow her down.

Nora Davis Day declined to answer any questions before releasing a formal statement.
