The life cycle called alternation of generations in plants exhibits two multicellular stages, that is, the haploid gametophyte and the diploid sporophyte.

A kind of life cycle that takes place in certain plants and algae in the Archaeplastida and the Heterokontophyta, which have different sexual haploid and asexual diploid phases is known as metagenesis or alternation of generations.
