If I were to continue this experiment by removing the egg from the water and covering it in syrup I hypothesize that the syrup would also dissolve the shell and the syrup would begin to transport into the egg, but at a slower rate due to the consistency of syrup. Based on diffusion, it would transport through the shell which is the area of high concentration, to the inside of of the egg which is the area of much lower concentration. This would also cause the egg to grow bigger in circumference as it did in the experiment.
