The founders of my country (Republic of Macedonia), initially choose the ethnic boundary in order to establish the country. Unfortunately, that turned out to not be possible because of occupation from three other countries, and on top of that there was genocide and forced movement of people.
When the country finally came in a situation to gain independence, the boundaries were established in accordance to the physical features, with the border predominantly being along the highest points of the mountains. Also, the present day boundary is the ''boundary'' of one of the three regional parts of Macedonia, the Vardar part of it, so it is a mixture.

LOUISANA ANSWER
Explanation:
The only boundaries the French recognized were those existing when Spain gave them the colony, and these were very uncertain. Louisiana was a huge land mass, and no one knew for sure just how far it reached. This opened the door for new exploration and settlement.
The United States also based state boundaries on rivers, and as railroad lines opened across the country, used tracks to determine where one state ended and the next began. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, leaders decided to base state boundaries in this region on where slavery was legal, and the Missouri Compromise in 1818 solidified this practice. Louisana's boundaries were determined by rivers.
