With regards to mass media sensationalism, the most important thing to do is to seriously gauge the real importance of the event being broadcasted for society. Many times, media outlets will magnify events that are actually just personal events involving celebrities and which have no impact on most people lives. It is important to stay away from such media outlets or from such coverage and only pay attention to what actually has actual relevance to people’s lives or objectively important issues.

Sensationalist coverage may also manipulate a private event on an ordinary person’s life for the sake of political ideology. If the event is proven to be important and relevant but the coverage is sensationalistic, the best thing is to carefully study its background and context by consulting credible, verifiable sources as university or scientific ones.

The next step would be to carefully select the media outlets that provide the best coverage in terms of objectivity, seriousness and hard fact-checking, whether they be mainstream or not.
