The first established death penalty laws date as far back as the Eighteenth Century B.C. in the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon, which codified the death penalty for 25 different crimes. An early supporter of the death penalty was the Babylonian King Hammurabi. In his set of laws, he set the legal punishment as “an eye for an eye”. This popular phrase was used to punish criminals with death for 25 crimes, although murder was not one of them.
