"As I Grew Older" is a poem about a long-ago desire of an African-American. Due to racial discrimination and injustice, his goal began to fade as he grew older. Previously, being a member of the black community meant being bound to serve their community for the rest of their lives. There was no way for them to turn around and accomplish their objectives. This poem's speaker is in a similar situation. But, someway, he mastered the art of facing his fears. He destroyed the wall that stood between him and his dream, bursting like the sun, with a clinched fist.
Meaning of the poem
Hughes discusses how he was unable to attain his purpose in this poem. In his boyhood, he had a dream. As he grew older, he recognized that achieving his objective in a country marked by racial injustice and inequality would be tough. The impediments were like a huge, thick barrier between him and his desire. He did, however, learn to fight back over time. He was aware of the strength he possessed. He hoped to shatter the wall and lighten the place his community was barricaded into with this energy.
Meaning of line 5 and 7:
- The speaker mentions how he had virtually forgotten about his dream a long time ago. In his childhood or adolescence, he saw the dream of doing something better in his life. Whatever the case, the circumstances turned against him, leaving him with merely a reflection of his dream. He can see the radiance of his dream. It was as bright as the sun. If the sky represents his mind, the sun represents his dream.
- Hughes noticed that as he grew older and younger, an increasing wall of discrimination was erecting itself silently. All of the unfortunate African Americans were projected from the projectile of development, freedom, and growth by this wall. This wall symbolises racism, inequality, prejudice, and injustice, among other things.
- It ascended gently and quietly. The speaker had no idea that one day it will completely obscure the light. It was as tall as a massive mountain.
