While he was up there, the only way to entertain himself was sticks. So he pretended they were people and struck up conversations with them from time to time at certain times of day (whenever he felt lonely). One day, as he laid in a pile of sticks in his cave very hungry, he heard a peddler and smelled food. He got up because the hunger got the best of him. He then met the man and paid for the food with the rest of his money he had and ate.
