President Truman made the right choice for the American people. He was faced with the horrific option of losing millions of American with a mainland invasion of Japan, or dropping the atomic bombs and decimating Japanese life but saving American life. Dropping two bombs was necessary because even with the first, and the soviets invading Manchuria Japan was going to hold out. Japan fought to the death, with kamikazes and banzai charges the American populace grew tired of the high American casualties from island hoping, and a mainland invasion would have ended horribly, considering the fact that in southern Japan our intelligence estimated a low garrison of mostly untrained militias was our best spot to land a invasion force larger than d-day, was terribly incorrect, Japan had large numbers seasoned troops in the region, I would’ve made the same decision as president and I would continued to put American life first.
