The Menes wanted to rule over both upper and lower Egypt because ruling over both will give a higher status, more wealth, and power. They also united both kingdoms because of the protection from getting invaded and they had a stable food supply. The two kingdoms had a natural barrier that made invading into them extremely hard. The desert was big and it was hard to cross it.
