What is secession and its causes?
The Confederacy was founded as a result of Southern States seceding, and the Civil War followed. The Union soldiers destroyed the Confederate armies in the Civil War (1861–1865), ending the most significant secession effort in American history.
SECESSION CAUSES
The North and South of the country were at odds prior to the Civil War. Although there were conflicts about tariffs and States' Rights, the debate over slavery, which was lawful in the South but gradually outlawed by states north of the Mason-Dixon line, caused the largest rift. Acrimonious arguments about whether or not slavery would be legalised in those territories emerged when the US acquired new territories in the west. Southerners were fearful that if no more slaveholding states were added, abolitionists would gain control of the government and slavery would be prohibited entirely. They believed it was only a matter of time until this happened. They also took offence at the idea that while a northern industrialist may open factories or any other type of business in the new territory, agrarian Southern slaveowners were barred from doing the same since their slaves would then be free.
